A fabric-led approach

Safe upholstery cleaning begins before the machine is switched on

Two sofas can look similar while containing very different fibres, dyes, backings, fillings and trims. That is why upholstery should never be cleaned with one fixed product or method.

We first inspect the item, discuss stains and previous treatments, check accessible care information and assess whether the fabric is suitable for cleaning. Testing helps us identify risks such as colour movement, browning, shrinkage, texture change or damage that cleaning cannot reverse.

Only then do we select the products, moisture level and method. Suitable upholstery may be cleaned by controlled hot water extraction; other items may require a lower-moisture approach—or may be declined if the risk is unacceptable.

  • Method selected for the individual fabric
  • Careful colour-stability and suitability checks
  • Targeted treatment for appropriate stains and odours
  • Clear drying and aftercare guidance

Our eight-stage upholstery cleaning process

The exact products and cleaning method change with the furniture, but a careful professional clean normally follows these core stages.

Furniture inspection

We assess the visible fabric, construction, trims, cushion fillings, wear, stains, previous cleaning and accessible care labels. Existing damage or permanent colour change is discussed before work begins.

THE RIGHT METHOD STARTS WITH A CAREFUL ASSESSMENT

Fibre & dye testing

Where appropriate, inconspicuous tests help us judge colour stability, response to moisture and product suitability. If the risk is too high, we explain that rather than gamble with the furniture.

TESTING HELPS IDENTIFY RISKS BEFORE FULL CLEANING

Detailed vacuuming

We vacuum the frame, cushions, seams, folds and accessible crevices to recover crumbs, hair and dry soil before moisture is introduced.

DRY SOIL IS BEST REMOVED WHILE IT IS STILL DRY

Suitable pre-treatment

A cleaning solution chosen for the fabric and soiling is applied in a controlled manner. Greasy contact areas and general soil may need different attention.

PRODUCT CHOICE AND MOISTURE LEVEL ARE FABRIC-DEPENDENT

Targeted stain treatment

Individual spots receive appropriate specialist treatment where safe. Many marks improve greatly, but dye loss, bleaching, wear and fibre damage cannot be cleaned away.

HONEST EXPECTATIONS—NO GUARANTEE THAT EVERY STAIN WILL VANISH

Controlled fabric cleaning

Suitable upholstery is cleaned using carefully controlled extraction or another appropriate method, working methodically across cushions, seats, arms, backs and accessible sections.

THE PROCESS IS ADAPTED TO THE ITEM—NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND

Moisture recovery & finishing

We recover as much moisture as practical, inspect the clean and groom suitable fabrics to support an even appearance and orderly drying.

CONTROLLED MOISTURE HELPS REDUCE AVOIDABLE DRYING RISKS

Drying & aftercare advice

We explain ventilation, cushion positioning and when the furniture can return to normal use. Optional protector is discussed separately where suitable.

GOOD AFTERCARE IS PART OF THE PROFESSIONAL PROCESS

Specialist fabric judgment

Why the method changes from one sofa to another

A good process is consistent, but it is never inflexible. Upholstery materials and construction determine what can be cleaned safely and how.

FIBRE & WEAVE

The face fabric

Natural, synthetic and blended fabrics can react differently to moisture, heat, agitation and cleaning chemistry. Even fabrics described by the same name can vary.

DYES & FINISHES

Colour stability

Testing helps us assess whether dyes, printed patterns, pile direction or special finishes create additional cleaning risks.

CONSTRUCTION

Backings, fillings & trims

Hidden materials, buttons, piping, decorative trims and cushion fillings can influence the moisture level, technique and drying plan.

SOIL & STAINS

The nature of the problem

Body oils, drink spills, food, pet accidents and general soiling are different problems and may need different treatments.

CONDITION

Wear versus dirt

Cleaning removes soil; it cannot rebuild flattened pile, repair abrasion, reverse sun fading or replace colour already lost from the fibres.

OPTIONAL EXTRA

Fabric protection

Protector may be available for suitable, freshly cleaned upholstery. It is quoted as an optional treatment—not described as free or automatically included.

Preparing for your appointment

A few simple steps help the clean run smoothly

We will confirm any item-specific instructions when you book. In most homes, preparation is straightforward:

  • Remove personal items, throws and loose objects from the furniture
  • Secure pets safely away from the working area
  • Point out stains, odours and any previous DIY treatments
  • Make accessible care labels available where possible
  • Allow space and ventilation around the furniture for drying

Should I remove the cushion covers?

Usually not. Please leave removable covers in place unless we specifically advise otherwise. Washing a cover separately can create shrinkage or colour differences and may make it difficult to refit correctly.

How long will the furniture take to dry?

Drying depends on fabric, construction, fillings, cleaning method, soiling, room temperature, humidity and airflow. We recover as much moisture as practical and give guidance for the conditions on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about professional upholstery cleaning

Can every sofa be cleaned using hot water extraction?
No. Suitability depends on the fibre, dyes, construction, backing, fillings, trims and condition. We inspect and test before deciding whether controlled extraction or another method is appropriate.
Can you clean velvet upholstery?
Some velvet can be professionally cleaned, but velvet may be made from different fibres and constructed in different ways. We must assess the individual material before confirming suitability and method.
Can professional cleaning remove every stain?
No reputable cleaner should guarantee every stain will disappear. Many improve greatly, but dye loss, bleaching, wear, fibre damage and some previous products can leave permanent marks. We set honest expectations.
Are the cleaning products child- and pet-safe?
We use professional products selected for the item and follow their directions carefully. Children and pets should remain away from the working area and damp upholstery until we advise that normal use can resume.
Can you treat pet urine and odours in a sofa?
Many suitable incidents can be treated, but liquid may travel into foam, feather fillings, timber or other inaccessible parts of the furniture. We will explain when surface and fabric cleaning may not fully resolve deep contamination.
Is stain protection included in the clean?
Fabric protection is an optional treatment for suitable, freshly cleaned upholstery. We confirm suitability and any additional price in the quotation rather than implying it is automatically included.
How do I get an accurate quotation?
